UK weather: Britain to face cold and frosty starts after Easter heatwave

Cool temperatures and sunny skies expected for much of country

The UK is expected to remain cool and dry for much of the week after temperatures peaked at 25C over the Bank Holiday weekend.

Following the unseasonably warm weather, the country is set to brace for a number of cold and frosty starts that eventually give way to clear, sunny skies.

While the mercury plummeted on Monday night to as low as -4C, Britain can expect to brighten up on Tuesday – the “only exception being the far northwest where cloud will remain,” the Met Office said.

“Temperatures cooler where onshore breezes,” it added.

It will be more of the same throughout Wednesday and Thursday, with the northwest remaining “stubbornly cloudy”.

London and central England will record highs of 18C on Thursday afternoon.

The rest of the country is poised for fine, bright, sunny weather – although south-west England and southern Wales are expected to see some showers.

Friday is expected to be “cloudy on the whole, with heavy showers across the south,” said Emma Salter, a forecaster for the Met Office.

Saturday will see occasional outbreaks of rain but remain generally warm.

The cool weather follows record high temperatures for Easter, which saw the government urge people to remain indoors and continue to abide by social distancing measures in order to help slow the spread of coronavirus.
