Charles Clarke 'ashamed' to be Labour MP

Former home secretary Charles Clarke is the latest MP to go on the attack against Gordon Brown, declaring himself 'ashamed' to be a Labour MP.

In an interview with the BBC, he said: "There have been things that have been done recently which have made me feel ashamed to be a Labour Member of Parliament, which was (a position) I never ever wanted to be in.

"I worked ... over my whole political life to get Labour into a position where it could be a good Government and I do see that fading away... And it feels absolutely appalling."

Mr Clarke's comments follow former home secretary David Blunkett's warning to the Prime Minister. Speaking on BBC Radio 4's Today programme, he said there had been a "catastrophic" collapse in trust and that Labour must regain its "antennae" on domestic issues.
