Nigeria blast: Two female suicide bombers 'kill 11'

The second suicide attack in two days has left 11 people dead in Nigeria after two female bombers detonated explosive devices in a market in a northern city.

Kano, one of the largest cities to the north of the country, was hit by two bombs in its main market only moments apart earlier today.

Witnesses said the first went off outside the Farm Centre mobile phone centre and the other at the entrance to the market just after 3pm. Both are believed to have been set off by female bombers.

Although no group has yet claimed responsibility, Boko Haram is known to operate in the area and only yesterday a similar suicide attack that killed at least 32 people in the northern city of Yolo was staged.

President Muhammadu Buhari condemned the attacks, labelling them barbaric.

The latest atrocities come shortly after the Global Terrorism Index designated Boko Haram the deadliest terror organisation in the world – overtaking Isis. The militants were responsible for 7,512 deaths last year.

Nigerians also have to contend with Fulani militants, although their attacks tend to be concentrated around the central belt of the country.

The Nigerian government has come under severe criticism for its handling of the insurgency. Most recently, a former security advisor was arrested after it was alleged he had stolen around $2billion intended for military equipment.
