Black sent to jail after last appeal for bail is denied

The former newspaper baron Conrad Black was denied bail by a US federal appeals court yesterday and ordered to go to prison on Monday. Black, 62, convicted of defrauding the shareholders of his Hollinger International empire, had sought bail on the grounds that there was a strong possibility his conviction would be reversed. Black's two co-defendants, Peter Atkinson and John Boultbee, were granted bail while appealing against their sentences. But the judge said there was no realistic chance of any appeals court overturning one conviction that applied to Black only and not Atkinson or Boultbee.

Black, a former owner of The Daily Telegraph, was filmed removing boxes of documents from his Toronto office and convicted of obstruction of justice.
