New Christ statue being built in Brazil to be taller than Christ the Redeemer

The structure will be the third tallest statue of Christ in the world and will tower over Brazil’s famous Christ the Redeemer

A new statue of Christ costing $350,000 (£255,000) is being built in Encantado, Brazil.

Work began on Christ the Protector in 2019 and, at 43m (140 ft) high including its pedestal, the statue will be bigger than Rio de Janeiro’s famous 38m Christ the Redeemer statue.

It will be the third tallest statue of Jesus in the world. 

Only the Jesus Buntu Burake statue in Sulawesi, Indonesia, at 52.55m including its pedestal, and Christ the King in Swiebodzin, Poland, which is 52.5m high including its mound, are taller.

The statue was the idea of local politician and mayorAdroaldo Conzatti, who unfortunately died with Covid-19 in March 2021.

A father-son team of sculptors, Genesio and Markus Moura, are overseeing the work, France 24 reported.

An internal lift will take tourists to a viewpoint in the chest region, 40m up.

The statue is expected to be completed later in the year.
