Merritt Corrigan's controversial writings resurface as she takes on new role with international aid agency

A new White House staffer appointed by President Donald Trump once suggested America was a “homo-empire” ruled by a “tyrannical LGBT agenda” in a slew of writings that have since come back to haunt her.

Merritt Corrigan, White House deputy liaison at the US Agency for International Development (USAID), wrote that “our homo-empire couldn’t tolerate even one commercial enterprise not in full submission to the tyrannical LGBT agenda” in a tweet posted to her personal account, Politico reported, which has since been made private.

Ms Corrigan, who previously worked at the Hungarian embassy in Washington, has also claimed the country’s leader Viktor Orbán “is the shining champion of Western civilization” in a separate post.

She also tweeted: “Liberal democracy is little more than a front for the war being waged against us by those who fundamentally despise not only our way of life, but life itself.”

The writings were reported on last year when Ms Corrigan, a former Republican National Committee employee, began working as a political liaison for the Hungarian embassy, and have since resurfaced amid reports of her new post at the international aid agency.

Ms Corrigan also encouraged women not to work and instead take on more traditional roles of homemaking in an op-ed for The Conservative Woman last year.

“A woman today is expected by society to come to marriage and motherhood in physical and spiritual decline, if ever,” she wrote. “This is the life women have been offered by those who would rather us toil away as isolated economic units for faceless corporations, far from the natural pleasures of the domestic, far from the guardianship of a loving husband, and far from the life-giving experience of motherhood.”

In that same piece, Ms Corrigan claimed “feminism has reduced women to cheap imitations of men” and “made a mockery of our real feminine abilities and defiled our bodies, once the sacred possession of husbands who could protect and serve us”.

“It’s time for women to return to the home,” she added, “where we rightfully belong and where real joy and fulfilment await.”

Pooja Jhunjhunwala, acting USAID spokesperson, said the agency has a “zero-tolerance policy of any form of discrimination or harassment based on gender, race, sexual orientation, religion or any other possible distinguishing characteristic that can define any of us” in a statement to Rolling Stone after reports indicated Ms Corrigan was joining the agency.

The statement continued: “All employees are held to the highest of standards and are expected to treat one another with dignity and respect. Period. This includes political appointees, civil servants, foreign service officers and contractors.”
