Afghanistan suicide car bomb kills ten near Kabul compound

At least ten people have died after a bomb exploded in the Afghanistan capital of Kabul.

The suicide bomb attack happened near a compound where Afghanistan's political and tribal elites are due to gather next week to debate a security pact with the United States.

Officials in the capital say the bomber crashed a vehicle filled with explosives into an Afghan army vehicle.

One man fleeing the bombing described seeing a white Totoya Corolla vehicle speed towards a police checkpoint and then explode.

Saturday's attack took place just hours after President Hamid Karzai called on the Taliban to take part in the Loya Jirga assembly that convenes on Thursday to decide whether to allow some US troops to stay in Afghanistan after 2014.

A police officer was among those soldiers and civilians killed in the attack.

So far, no group has claimed responsibility for the attack.
