Coronavirus: Global cases top 25 million

US has around 5.9 million infections

The number of people around the world who have had a confirmed coronavirus infection has passed 25 million.

The international tally reached the milestone on Sunday, according to Johns Hopkins University.

Meanwhile, there have been more than 842,000 coronavirus-related deaths globally.

The US has reported the largest number of Covid-19 infections and deaths of any country in the world to date.

More than 5.9 million people have tested positive for the virus in the country as of Sunday, while the death toll stood at around 182,700.

Brazil has the second largest number of reported infections globally at around 3.8 million, followed by India at 3.5 million.

The real number of people infected by the virus around the world is believed to be much higher than the reported figures.

The tally could be 10 times higher in the US, according to the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention – given testing limitations and the many mild cases that have gone unreported or unrecognised.

After the US, Brazil has seen the second highest number of coronavirus-related deaths in the world as of Sunday, when the total stood at 120,262.

Mexico had the third-largest death toll for Covid-19 at around 63,800.

Sunday’s figures come as India registered a record 78,761 new coronavirus cases in the past 24 hours – the worst single-day spike in the world.
