Bomb kills British soldier

The soldier, from the 1st Battalion, the Coldstream Guards, was conducting a search operation in Basra on Tuesday night. He was the ninth soldier to die in a spate of similar ambushes in the last six months.

The Defence Secretary, John Reid, said: "The death of this British soldier in Iraq deeply saddens me. All our thoughts and sympathies are with the family at this very difficult time."
