Darren Lehmann lands new coaching role with Cricket Australia

The appointment comes just six weeks after Lehmann’s resignation as head coach in the wake of the ball-tampering scandal

Darren Lehmann has a new role with Cricket Australia’s National Performance Programme.

Lehmann will assist head coach Troy Cooley alongside fellow ex-Test players Ryan Harris and Chris Rogers in mentoring and developing the next wave of international players.

It has been only six weeks since Lehmann’s resignation as head coach in the wake of the ball-tampering scandal. Cricket Australia cleared Lehmann of involvement in ‘Sandpaper-gate’ but Lehmann felt stepping down was the right thing for Australian cricket.

He will begin his new role on the 28th of May and has been appointed initially until October. Lehmann drew praise for his stint in charge of the national team and remains a highly-rated coach, and it is believed that Cricket Australia were eager to keep the 48-year-old involved. Justin Langer was announced as the new head coach last week.

Cooley said: "I had a good chat with 'Boof' [Lehmann], and he was really keen to continue his coaching. What a great opportunity - having his expert skills in the areas that we need.

"He'll work with our targeted group of NPS players ... they'll all be able to talk to Darren about playing on sub-continental wickets, get his Twenty20 thoughts, one-day and long-format thoughts about how to play and how to adjust your training.

"To have someone who's got that experience matching up with our coaching staff, it's invaluable. Darren has already told me he is relishing the opportunity, so it's win-win all round."
