Kallis and Kirsten devastate West Indies

Jacques Kallis and Gary Kirsten took full advantage of seasonal West Indian generosity to erase a fourth-wicket record that had stood for 75 years as South Africa compiled 658 for 9 declared, to take complete control of the second Test here yesterday.

When the captain, Graeme Smith, declared, South Africa's highest-ever total in a home Test gave them a massive lead of 394. It left the West Indies 10 overs to survive, which Wavell Hinds and Daren Ganga did while scoring 18.

But two difficult days lie ahead for the tourists, who are 1-0 down in the four-Test series after their 189-run defeat in the first Test in Johannesburg.

Kirsten survived chances to Brian Lara, at first slip, on 22 and Vasbert Drakes, at gully, on 41 to score 137 in his partnership of 249 with Kallis.

Kirsten, South Africa's most capped player in his 96th Test, passed 7,000 runs in the process. His 20th Test hundred, the most by a South African, was ended when Drakes held a catch on the midwicket boundary off the leg-spin of Ramnaresh Sarwan. Kallis was badly dropped by Drakes at long-leg from a miscued hook off Fidel Edwards after adding 11 to his overnight 74. He went on to make 177.

Their stand surpassed the 214 put on by H W Taylor and H G Deane against England at The Oval in 1929.

Kallis' second hundred of the series was his 13th in his 73rd Test. He hit 20 fours in the eight hours he dominated ineffective West Indian bowling on a true, easy-paced pitch. He was in sight of his first Test double century when caught at point off Merv Dillon at 562 for 5.

By then, the West Indies were cracking under the pressure and spilled three more catches before Smith declared to give Shaun Pollock and Makhaya Ntini 10 overs at the end of the day. In the first Test, they took three second-innings wickets from as many overs at the end of the fourth day, but could not repeat the feat.
