Twenty20: Michael Carberry set for international debut against Australia
Broad, Root and Finn only members of Ashes squad to feature in squad
Only three members of England’s Ashes squad will feature in the brief Twenty20 series against Australia.
It is a reflection of the manner in which the formats of the international game have become separate and distinct as much as the need to give players a rest.
The trio involved are Stuart Broad, Joe Root and Steve Finn. Broad is picked because he is captain and if the selectors could have given him a rest they would have done. With a World Twenty20 taking place next March that was not deemed to be possible. Finn has played in only one of the Ashes so far.
The T20 squad of 13 includes the uncapped Michael Carberry, who has made vast recent strides in the shortest form of the game which culminated with a hundred in the domestic T20 quarter final tie for Hampshire against Lancashire.
The two matches will be played on Thursday August 31 at the Ageas Bowl, Southampton and on Saturday September 2 at the Emirates Durham ICG.
England T20 squad: SCJ Broad (Nottinghamshire, captain), RS Bopara (Essex),DR Briggs (Hampshire), JC Buttler (Somerset, wk), MA Carberry (Hampshire), JW Dernbach (Surrey), STFinn (Middlesex), AD Hales (Nottinghamshire), MJ Lumb (Nottinghamshire), EJG Morgan (Middlesex), WB Rankin (Warwickshire), JE Root (Yorkshire) JC Tredwell (Kent, LJ Wright (Sussex).
