Westfield to be sentenced today

Mervyn Westfield, the former Essex fast bowler, will today be sentenced having last month pleaded guilty to spot-fixing.

Westfield, 23, admitted he was paid £6,000 to give away runs in a Pro40 game against Durham in September 2009. He faces a possible jail sentence after becoming the first English player to be convicted of being involved in on-field corruption.

Westfield was accused of breaking the Prevention of Corruption Act 1906. His conviction follows that of three Pakistan players, Salman Butt, Mohammad Amir and Mohammad Asif, for spot-fixing in a 2010 Test against England.
