Barcelona midfielder Arda Turan is stranded in Turkey following the failed coup on Friday night that saw more than 161 people killed.

A faction of the Turkish military attempted to overthrow the Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdogan and his government late on Friday night, with military vehicles seen in the streets across the country and more than 1,000 people wounded.

1,563 military personnel have been detained after the Turkish government and military forces loyal to President Erdogan fought back against the military faction, with the government regaining control by Saturday morning.

However, flights in and out of Turkey have been suspended due to the unrest, leaving Barcelona midfielder and Turkey international Turan and former players Carles Puyol, Deco and Eric Abidal stranded in Turkey.

Furthermore, star players Lionel Messi and Andres Iniesta were due to travel to Turkey to take part in a pre-season charity friendly organised by their former teammate Samuel Eto’o, but the club confirmed they will no long travel and remain safe in Spain. The match itself may now be cancelled, having been organised to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Samuel Eto'o Foundation.

A club statement read: “FC Barcelona players Andres Iniesta and Leo Messi, who were set to play a friendly match in Turkey organised by former Barca star Samuel Eto’o, are in Spain.

“FC Barcelona player Arda Turan, former players Carles Puyol, Deco and Eric Abidal, as well as former director Alejandro Echevarria, are in Turkey, far from areas of danger and in constant contact with the club.”

A statement from Turkish Airlines, who have cancelled all flights in and out of Turkey, read: “Due to the unexpected unrest that occurred on the 16th of July 2016 in Turkey, we would kindly ask all passengers to check the latest information about their flights, before embarking on their journey.”
