FA Cup fifth round draw: Chelsea are set to play Man Utd

Manchester City kept their quadruple hopes alive with a 4-1 win at Newport to reach the quarter-finals of the FA Cup.

Second-half goals from Leroy Sane, Phil Foden (2) and Riyad Mahrez ensured City's class eventually told against opponents 82 places below them on the league ladder.

Padraig Amond maintained his record of scoring in every round for Newport two minutes from time, but hopes of a dramatic comeback were brief as Foden's second and Mahrez finished the job.

City had scored 12 goals without reply against Rotherham and Burnley to reach the last 16, but it was never going to be as straightforward away to County hosts who have made a habit of embarrassing bigger clubs.

Newport have beaten Leeds, Leicester and Middlesbrough, as well as drawing with Tottenham, at Rodney Parade in the last 14 months and they again emerged with credit for frustrating City for so long.

Player ratings

Newport County

Joe Day - 5 out of 10

A forgettable evening at the end of a memorable FA Cup run. Will be disappointed to concede three of City's four goals, was culpable for two.

Regan Poole - 6 out of 10

On loan from Manchester United, struggled with City's movement and intricacy at times.

Mickey Demetriou - 7 out of 10

A serious threat in the first half with his long throws, though less effective as the game went on.

Mark O’Brien - 6 out of 10

Lucky not to concede a penalty for handball before half time when he blocked Sané's cross with his arm.

Robbie Willmott - 7 out of 10

A threat carrying the ball forward though, after the heroics against Middlesbrough, will be disappointed not to have made more of an impression.

Tyreeq Bakinson - 6 out of 10

Spurned Newport's finest chance to take the lead, though in fairness it took an outstanding save from Ederson to deny him.

Joss Labadie - 6 out of 10

Went close shortly after Bakinson's miss on the half volley.

Scot Bennett - 6 out of 10

Struggled in the battle for midfield supremacy against City's trio.

Dan Butler - 8 out of 10

Newport's best player. Went toe-to-toe with Mahrez, who was eager to impress, and forced errors out of the Algerian.

Jamille Matt - 6 out of 10

A traditional lower-league target man but failed to make his presence felt, despite intelligent running into the channels.

Padraig Amond - 7 out of 10

Quiet until his late intervention to make it 2-1. Expertly taken finish to capitalise on Aymeric Laporte's error.

Manchester City

Ederson - 8 out of 10

Remarkable save to deny Bakinson in the opening stages when a Newport goal would have made for a difficult evening.

Danilo - 8 out of 10

Marauded out from right-back plenty in the second half once City found a groove. Hit the post.

John Stones - 7 out of 10

Coped well with Matt's physicality and Amond's movement.

Nicolas Otamendi - 6 out of 10

Caught under the ball with Laporte for Amond's goal.

Oleksandr Zinchenko - 7 out of 10

Did not offer as much offensively as Danilo on the other flank but did well enough at left-back.

Fernandinho - 8 out of 10

A surprise selection in the middle of the park but his usual busy self, turning over possession in midfield and progressing the ball forward.

Phil Foden - 8 out of 10

Two goals for the teenager in perhaps his most impressive senior outing to date. "Brilliant," according to his manager.

David Silva - 7 out of 10

A little hesistant at times, perhaps suffering the effects of the pitch, crowd and opponents more than most, but still tidy.

Riyad Mahrez - 6 out of 10

A regular outlet for City down the right but met a determined wing-back in Butler. Struggled for fluency before his late goal.

Gabriel Jesus - 6 out of 10

Has a hand in Sané's opening goal, linking up down the left, but other than that did not have much of an impact.

Leroy Sané - 8 out of 10

Saw as much of the ball as Mahrez in the first half and made better decisions.
