Phil Gartside dead: Bolton announce death of former chairman

Gartside was in charge of the club during Bolton's successful years in the Premier League

Bolton have announced the death of former chairman Phil Gartside at the age of 63.

The Championship club revealed that Gartside passed away after a short battle with cancer.

Gartside joined the club in 1988 before becoming chairman in 1999. During his tenure he would oversee the club's promotion to the Premier League where they would enjoy four consecutive top-eight finishes in the top flight. They were also involved in two Uefa Cup campaigns.

Vice chairman Brett Warburton said on Bolton's official website: “Phil has been a personal friend for over 30 years and this is a very sad day for everybody associated with Bolton Wanderers.

“On behalf of Eddie Davies, the board and everyone associated with the club we send our deepest condolences to all Phil’s family and ask that their privacy is respected during what is a difficult time for all involved.”

An official statement from the club said that Gartside's funeral would be a private service, in line with his family's wishes.
