Euro 2016 news: Germany's Mario Gomez ruled out for rest of the tournament due to injury

The German striker is joined by Sami Khedira who also picked up an injury in Saturday's victory against Italy

Germany’s Mario Gomez has been ruled out of their semi-final clash with either France or Iceland after picking up a hamstring injury.

The striker, who is currently out on loan to Besiktas, was forced off in the second half of his side’s quarter-final clash with rivals Italy.

Gomez left the pitch in the 72^nd minute and is believed to have torn his hamstring muscle which is expected to keep him out of the rest of Euro 2016.

The 30-year-old wasn’t the only player to pick up an injury in Germany’s victory. Both Sami Khedira and Bastian Schweinsteiger remain doubtful having sustained knocks.

Khedira, who also missed Germany’s winning 2014 World Cup final through injury, was brought off in the 16^th minute of the match due to a similar injury to Gomez having strained a muscle in his thigh.

Schweinsteiger was brought on as a substitute but he too went on to suffer injury and is believed to have stretched a ligament in his right knee.

Germany will also be without suspended central defender Mats Hummels who has been ruled out of the semi-final after being shown a yellow card during Saturday’s fixture.

Speaking after the game, coach Joachim Low said: "It was not positive for Khedira to have to go off after 15 minutes. He has muscular problems in his thigh. I am not sure it will be working out for Thursday."

He later said: "It is very disappointing when, at this crucial stage of the tournament, important players are ruled out.

"I'm especially sorry for Mario. He has put in some strong performances at the European Championship and has helped the team not only with his goals."
