Sebastien Squillaci was today poised to complete a move to Arsenal after Sevilla confirmed the two clubs had agreed a fee for the defender.

The Spanish club revealed the news on their website last night, saying the 30-year-old Frenchman was on his way to England for a medical.

A statement read: "Defender Sebastien Squillaci is tonight travelling to London to have a medical at Arsenal, the club he will be transferred to after an agreement was reached by the two clubs pending the results of the medical."

Squillaci will strengthen an Arsenal rearguard weakened by the departures of William Gallas, Mikael Silvestre, Sol Campbell and Philippe Senderos if he does put pen to paper and complete a move to Arsene Wenger's men.

The former Lyon centre-half, who joined Sevilla from Les Gones two years ago, asked to be left out of the side for the Champions League play-off against Braga last week so he would not be cup-tied for European competition.

He will join a side oozing with confidence after their 6-0 destruction of Blackpool at the weekend.

Tormentor in chief at the Emirates was hat-trick man Theo Walcott, who reckons a new-found selfish streak is doing wonders for his game.

The 21-year-old was a controversial omission from Fabio Capello's ill-fated World Cup squad, only to be welcomed back into the England fold following the dismal display in South Africa.

Despite now winning the plaudits the former Southampton trainee knows there is plenty of hard work still ahead.

"I had a nice break, mentally, through the summer so I could think about things and am pushing on now," said Walcott, who has seen his progress hampered by a string of niggling fitness issues.

"I am 21, so I want to play games every week now, it is a big season for me.

"I have been very unlucky with injuries last season and I am looking out for myself a bit more now.

"I am one of the last to leave now, always staying behind after training, practising things; crosses and set-pieces.

"It is down to me, so I will look after myself and am raring to go now."
