Chelsea legend Ray Wilkins believes the club's current crop of first-team stars are behind under-pressure manager Jose Mourinho.

The Portuguese is enduring the worst spell of form in his trophy-laden managerial career, with the Blues down in 15th after defeat at home to Liverpool on Saturday - their sixth loss in 11 matches this season.

Wilkins, Chelsea's youngest ever captain and a Double winner as Carlo Ancelotti's assistant in 2010, believes the players are on his side, despite reports to the contrary emerging over the weekend.

"I think they're behind Mourinho - they're just not performing," he told BBC Radio 5 Live's Sportsweek.

"That's one of Jose's major assets. He has the ability not to control but to actually talk and get all the players on his side."

Wilkins also believes Mourinho's job is safe because Carlo Ancelotti is the only man who can take over right now.

"I think Jose will (still) be in the job. Who can take over? There's only Carlo Ancelotti out there at the moment that is out of work and can fill the position. I think they'll continue with Jose."

Chelsea face Dynamo Kiev in a must-win game on Wednesday night in the Champions League.

"It's a big game. It's a game that we cannot lose," Mourinho told Chelsea TV.
