With the senior squad in the United States ahead of their pre-season International Champions Cup, Chelsea fielded a youthful side in the comfortable 5-1 friendly win against Northern Premier League side Ilkeston on Tuesday.

New signing Cristian Cuevas, who joined in a £3m deal from Chilean club O’Higgins, 16-year-old Isaiah Brown and England Under-19 attacking midfielder Lewis Baker all featured in the side that ran out at the New Manor Ground.

John Swift opened the scoring for The Blues when his shot from 20-yards out beat Ilkeston goalkeeper Rob Peet to the bottom far corner, and Ruben Loftus-Cheek doubled the lead before half-time when he converted a penalty.

Ulises Davila added a third goal with a brilliant long-range effort in the second half before Jason Stokes pulled one back for the hosts to give the home crowd something to cheer about, though their joy didn’t last long as Alex Kiwomya scored Chelsea’s fourth after he rounded Peet and finished coolly.

Baker completed the easy win with his second when he lobbed the keeper into the far corner, and the Blues will have been pleased with the run-out having fielded a very inexperienced side.

The senior squad get their International Champions Cup campaign underway on Thursday when they meet Inter Milan in Indianapolis, having only just finished their tour of Asia last week.
