Glenn Hoddle ‘responding well’ but remains in serious condition after collapsing at BT Sport studio on 61st birthday

BT Sport Score presenter Jake Humphrey was among the first to send a message of support to the former England international

Glenn Hoddle is “responding well” in hospital on Saturday after falling ‘seriously ill’ on set at the BT Sport studio.

BT subsequently cancelled their weekly football results show BT Score.

A spokesman for Hoddle​ said: “The condition is serious but Glenn is currently receiving specialist treatment and responding well.”

Hoddle, who turned 61 on Saturday, had appeared on BT’s breakfast show, Live Saturday Morning Savage, alongside Robbie Savage and Paul Ince, and was set to appear on the Score show in the afternoon before being taken ill.

BT Sport Score presenter Jake Humphrey was among the first to send a message of support to the former England manager and international.

“Everyone of us is right with you Glenn, sending love & strength,” he tweeted. The commentator Darren Fletcher also tweeted: “Thoughts are with my mate & colleague @GlennHoddle. Awful news.”

Des Kelly, another of Hoddle’s colleagues on BT Sport Score, said: “Glenn Hoddle has been taken ill and he’s being cared for in hospital. Everyone at BT Sport and, I’m sure, right across football, will wish the lovely fella the very, very best.”

Gary Lineker wrote on Twitter: “Hugely worrying news that Glenn Hoddle collapsed at the BT studios earlier. Thoughts are with him and his family. Come on Glenn.”

Hoddle was a hugely talented player, earning 53 England caps and playing a key part for Tottenham in the early 1980s as they won back-to-back FA Cups. He managed Chelsea and then took England to the 1998 World Cup, before stints in charge of Southampton, Spurs and Wolves.

In 2008 he set up the Glenn Hoddle Academy in Spain, which focused on developing young technical players shunned by English football. He currently works as a pundit both for ITV’s coverage of England and for BT Sport, predominantly covering the Premier League.

Tottenham tweeted: “Everybody at the Club sends their best wishes to @GlennHoddle for a full and speedy recovery after he was taken ill this morning.”
