It would have been easy enough to make this a collection of Mario Balotelli pictures, such has been the Manchester City striker's impact on and off the field this season. Instead, we settled for some of the most striking images from a momentous Premier League season.

There was seemingly never-ending controversy: take your pick from Carlos Tevez refusing to leave the bench, the racism rows between Luis Suarez – who later refused to shake Patrice Evra's hand – or John Terry's row with Anton Ferdinand which still needs the courts to resolve.

On the pitch, we saw stunning scorelines – 8-2, 6-1, 5-3 – as the heavyweight contenders slugged it out rather than play it safe.

And that was all before yesterday's incredible denouement. A monumental end to the best title race in years, and City's first crown since 1968, as well as the tension at the bottom. Now all that is left is to see whether Chelsea can rule Europe, whether England and Republic of Ireland can make their nations proud this summer and whether West Ham or Blackpool in this crazy league come August. Roll on next season...
