Manchester United: Dimitar Berbatov confirms return by posting Wayne Rooney photograph

The veteran striker has returned to Carrington, United's training ground, to build up his fitness while he searches for a new club

Dimitar Berbatov has returned to former club Manchester United in order to build up his fitness at the club’s Carrington training ground.

The veteran striker is currently without a club having left Greek Superleague side PAOK in the summer and wishes to keep in shape ahead of his next move.

Reports of Berbatov’s prospective return to United circulated in Bulgaria, his home country, earlier this week, with some suggesting he was keen to observe Jose Mourinho's training methods.

On Thursday, Berbatov confirmed his arrival by uploading an image of himself and former strike partner Wayne Rooney to his official Facebook page.

The former Bulgaria international made a total of 149 appearances and scored 56 goals for United during his four-year spell at the club, having joined from Tottenham Hotspur for £30.75m.

Berbatov earned cult hero status at Old Trafford for his languid yet elegant style of play and memorably scored a hat-trick against rivals Liverpool in a 3-2 home win in September 2010.

Later that year, he scored five in a 7-1 win over Blackburn Rovers, becoming the first non-Englishman to score so many goals in one Premier League game.

Berbatov ended the 2010/11 season as the Premier League’s leading goalscorer and won the Golden Boot award, as United were crowned champions.

Berbatov, who also won the league title with United in 2009, moved to Fulham for an undisclosed fee in August 2012, before spells with Monaco and Greek Superleague side PAOK.
