Nemanja Matic has identified Manchester United academy products Angel Gomes and Tahith Chong to make their mark at the club after already impressing the club’s senior stars in training.

Gomes, 17, became the club’s youngest player since Duncan Edwards in the final game of last season when he made his debut against Crystal Palace, and has been included in two match-day squads so far this season, both in the FA Cup.

Chong meanwhile has impressed in the academy on the way back from a 10-month injury layoff after the 18-year-old damaged his knee ligaments at the start of last year.

Matic’s seven-year-old son Filip is also in the academy and the midfielder, who signed from Chelsea last summer, is backing the club’s young guns to push their way into the first team before long.

“They are good players,” Matic said in the match-day programme ahead of Sunday’s 2-1 win over Chelsea. “They're still very young but they show every time they train with us that Manchester United has a good future.

“I remember when I was young how important it was to train with the best players and I hope they will continue like this.”
