Rodgers aims for historic Swansea win over Everton

The last time Swansea travelled to Everton, Margaret Thatcher was celebrating a landslide election victory and American TV drama M*A*S*H was airing its final episode.

It was 1983, and City took a 2-2 draw away from Goodison Park – a good result bearing in mind Swansea have never beaten Everton in a competitive match since they first played in 1930.

Tonight, however, offers a great chance for a first victory at the home of the Merseyside giants. Swansea are 12th in their first season in the Premier League, a point ahead of 14th-placed Everton, although they have only won one of the last six.

A trip to Goodison is not as frightening as it was, with David Moyes' men struggling to muster any sort of momentum in front of their own supporters.

The other promoted teams, QPR and Norwich, have both stifled them – the former winning 1-0 and the latter taking a 1-1 draw on Saturday.

Swansea will be boosted by the return of Angel Rangel. The full-back, who had been an ever-present before injuring his ankle against Aston Villa in November, could go straight into the side after missing the last three matches. Nathan Dyer will sit the game out with a foot problem.

Everton have to start looking for more goals and could hand a first start to Denis Stracqualursi, who came on and changed the game against Norwich on Saturday.

Moyes does have attacking options, with a striking quartet of Stracqualursi, Tim Cahill, Louis Saha and Magaye Gueye possible. Royston Drenthe is pushing for a recall after impressing from the bench but Seamus Coleman and Jack Rodwell are out with thigh and hamstring strains respectively.
