Thirty-one-year-old will miss his side’s clash with the Premier League leaders on Monday night

Southampton’s Alex McCarthy has tested positive for coronavirus, ruling the goalkeeper out of his side’s home Premier League game against leaders and champions Liverpool on Monday evening.

McCarthy, who played in Southampton’s last fixture on 29 December – a goalless draw with West Ham – is now self-isolating.

Southampton coach Ralph Hasenhuttl said on Sunday that his keeper could also miss the Saints’ third-round FA Cup tie against League One outfit Shrewsbury Town on Saturday.

“After the last round of tests, we have one positive case now with Alex McCarthy, so he’s out for the game on Monday and maybe also the Shrewsbury game as he has to self-isolate for a period,” Hasenhuttl said.

The Austrian manager was forced to manage his team remotely during their draw with West Ham after a positive coronavirus test result in his household.

Southampton are ninth in the Premier League with 26 points from 16 games.
