Carlos Carvalhal is set to leave Swansea City at the end of the season following their relegation to the Championship, with the club choosing not to extend his contract.

The Portuguese joined the South Wales club at the end of December and initially impressed with five wins in nine games, leading to the club to open initial talks about taking up the option to extend his contract beyond the end of the season.

However, following a downturn in form which has seen Swansea drop into the bottom three and needing a 10-goal swing to leapfrog Southampton, who beat them at the Liberty Stadium on Tuesday evening.

Swansea were effectively relegated as a result of Huddersfield Town’s draw with Chelsea on Wednesday night, but their run of eight games without a win – five of those defeats – saw them facing a return to the Championship for the first time since 2011.

No confirmation of Carvalhal’s future has so far been made by the club, but it is expected that the situation will be addressed in the 52-year-old’s final pre-match press conference on Friday.

The news comes on the same day that the Swansea City Supporters Trust called for chairman Huw Jenkins to step down from his post following relegation.

The Trust, which owns a 20 per cent stake in the club and has a director on the board, reiterated its stance of no confidence in Jenkins and also demanded the club’s American owners run a full review into the “running of the footballing side of the club” and that the “Swansea way, for so long a source of considerable pride, has not existed for some time”.
