Olivier Giroud has been in contact with the president of Lyon ahead of a potential move to the Ligue 1 club this summer.

Lyon are growing increasingly resigned to the fact that Alexandre Lacazette will leave the club this summer and will need to buy a replacement striker if he does.

Lacazette has been linked with both Arsenal and Atletico Madrid, although Lyon are adamant that neither club has yet met their £57m valuation of the France international.

The club are already locating potential replacements however, with president Jean-Michel Aulas confirming that they would be interested in signing Giroud from Arsenal.

“There has been an approach, at some point, for Giroud,”he admitted in an interview with the French newspaper L’Equipe.

“He is a boy that we like, who scores lots of goals and who has a lot of ambition for Russia (World Cup).”

But Aulas also admitted that Giroud was still in talks with Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger over staying at the club.

“He told me personally that he wanted to take his time, that things were not completely defined with Arsenal, that he had a secret hope that he would be the number one striker next season,” Aulas added.

“The key is Arsène Wenger. We are watching. We will try to very quickly sign a top European attacker.”
