Marco Verratti’s agent has admitted that the midfielder may need to leave Paris Saint-Germain to win major trophies – but has insisted that the Italian would only leave the Parc des Princes for a “top European club”.

Donato Di Campli said that Verratti, 24, began a period of soul-searching following PSG’s humiliating 6-1 Champions League defeat to Barcelona and is in the process of “asking himself some big questions”.

The Italian is under contract with the club until 2021, but is thought to be a key transfer target for both Manchester United and Chelsea, among others.

"It's a complicated situation, because he has a good contract there," Di Campli said an interview with La Gazzetta dello Sport. "But he wants to win things and PSG, in the state they're in now, cannot win things.

"He's been in Paris for five years and now has to ask himself some big questions: should he carry on earning a lot without winning, or leave to become a champion?”

Di Campli offered little hint as to a potential destination for Verratti – although he did appear to rule out an imminent return to the player’s homeland.

"It's not a question of money - anyone who would take Verratti would pay him a lot - and one thing is sure... if he leaves PSG, it will be for a top European club.

"There are some top Italian clubs but I have my doubts Italy will be his final destination. Spain, the Premier League or the Bundesliga? A top European club."
