England Women set for clash with rivals Germany in October

Friendly marks Lionesses’ first game since SheBelieves Cup back in March

England Women will take on Germany in a friendly in Wiesbaden on 27 October, the Football Association (FA) confirmed on Monday.

The Lionesses have not played since the SheBelieves Cup in March, and their preparation for the Germany fixture will mark their first time training together since that third-place finish in the United States.

Phil Neville, who will be replaced by Netherlands Women’s coach Sarina Wiegman after next summer’s Euros, will lead the Lionesses’ training camp from 15-21 September at St. George’s Park.

England and Germany last met in November 2019 as a record 77,768 Wembley crowd watched the visitors emerge 2-1 winners.

The German FA confirmed, however, that there will be no supporters in attendance when the nations face off in Germany in October, owing to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

“I know the players are so hungry to pull on an England shirt again and this is a good test to see where we are early in the new season against strong opposition,” said England coach Neville.

“Germany away is a tough challenge, but we know what we’re capable of producing. I’m sure the players are excited about testing themselves against one of the best teams in the world.

“Next year is going to be a vital one for the players ahead of some major international tournaments in quick succession. While you can never fully replicate the pressure of a major finals, I know my squad will take a lot from the experience and I’m sure the fans will be relishing the chance to see us play again – even if unfortunately it has to be on television.”

The FA announced that other autumn fixtures could follow the clash against two-time World Cup winners Germany.
