Britain's Rachel Cawthorn continued her superb season by storming to victory in the single kayak 1,000m at the European Championships in Trasona, Spain.

The 21-year-old from Guildford led from 200m and powered away from halfway to win by more than two seconds. "European champion, it feels really good, but I don't think it has sunk in yet," Cawthorn said. "The plan was to go quite hard in the first half and then go flat out in the second half. It kind of worked."

Lorenzo grabs pole

World championship leader Jorge Lorenzo will start today's Catalunya MotoGP from pole as Casey Stoner produced a good late lap to take second, with Randy de Puniet in third. It was a third consecutive pole position for Lorenzo, who is also aiming for a third straight race win. "This will be the toughest race of the season for me, it's so hot and the rear tyre was sliding a lot," he said.

Fascinating finals day

There are tantalising finals in store today at Henley, writes Christopher Dodd. The Grand will be fought out between the Germans and New Zealanders after the former defeated Canada and the latter dismissed the GB eight with Greg Searle, the 1992 Olympic champion, in the No 6 seat. In the equivalent women's event, the Remenham, the British national crew meet Canada's equivalent. Britain's quadruple scullers, stroked by Katherine Grainger, are in the final of the Princess Grace against NZ.
