When is it?

The men’s singles final will be held on Sunday 14 August 2016.

What time will it be on?

The match will start at around 4pm BST (12pm local time in Rio).

Where can I watch it live?

BBC One, BBC Two, BBC Four, the BBC red button and the BBC Sport website will have live coverage of all events at Rio 2016.

Any British hopefuls?

Fresh from his second Wimbledon victory, the final will hopefully see Andy Murray defending his 2012 Olympic title.

Who are the other contenders?

He is likely to be facing another of the world’s heavyweights such as Switzerland’s Roger Federer or Serbia’s Novak Djokovic.

Despite winning the Wimbledon men’s singles title for two years out of the last three, Djokovic found him knocked out in the third round in a surprising loss to middle-ranker Sam Querrey.

Spanish star Rafael Nadal is also making a comeback this year after a string of injury-invoked bad luck. He had to have his entry approved by the International Tennis Federation after pulling out of the French Open earlier this year because of a wrist injury. He also had to abandon the London 2012 Olympics, again due to injury.

Canadian Milos Raonic, who went head to head with Murray in an intense Wimbledon final this summer has pulled out of the Olympics, citing health reasons including “the uncertainty around the Zika virus”.

Remember when…

The first person to win an Olympic gold medal in tennis essentially just turned up and won it.

John Pius Boland was holidaying in Athens at the time and was signed up to the singles event by his friend, who was on the organising committee. After winning the singles, he joined forces with the player he beat for the doubles tournament, which they also went on to win.
