The Grand National 2019 in numbers

The 2019 Grand National is just one day away.

The 40 runners and riders are now confirmed with excitement building ahead of the 172nd running of the world’s most famous horse race.

Tiger Roll, who of course won a year ago, is the favourite to do so again this time around but with 39 other rivals to beat the Gordon Elliott-trained gelding won't have it all his own way.

It promises to be a spectacular day of racing, with over £300m expected to be staked on the big race alone in one of the biggest gambling days in the calendar.

But what will the weather conditions be like, and how they will impact on the running of the National?

What’s the latest weather forecast for the Grand National?

It’s looking like it is going to a fine day.

Ladies Day at Aintree was on the cloudy side, with highs of 11°C, but conditions are likely to improve in time for the National on Saturday.

Highs of 13°C are expected, with temperatures of 12°C forecast for the 17.15 start time.

There is less than a five per cent charge of rain throughout the day – which is good news for punters and jockeys alike.

How will the weather impact on the race?

On Friday morning, Aintree said that the going on the famous Grand National course was soft in places.

Andrew Tulloch, Clerk of the Course at Aintree, said at 9.00am April 5: “There was 12mm of rain yesterday, which finished around 8.00pm. We then had a dry night.

“The forecast for today is that there is a band of rain just sitting to the south of us which will bring some drizzle this morning. This should hopefully clear by mid-morning.

“After that, it should be a bright afternoon but will remain breezy. Going forward, it should then remain largely dry for the rest of the meeting.

“There is the possibility of a shower tomorrow but most of the rain should have passed us over by then.

“I am keeping the going as soft on all courses at the moment.”
