The Challenge Martini, the most prestigious event in the British fencing calendar, attracts a world-class entry. A round of the men's World Cup, the event for epee will also count towards places in the British squad for the World Championships in Essen this summer. Mike Corish, from Surrey, and Steven Paul, the London fencer who won the men's national epee championship last month, lead the British entry of 24. Vladimir Resintschenko, the champion from Germany, defends and the British team will have further opposition in the French Olympic champion, Eric Secki, who has won the Martini twice, and Sandro Cuomo, the finalist who has yet to win the title. The Italian, known for his flamboyant attacking style, sees 1993 as his year.
