UFC confirm four events on ‘fight island’ in Abu Dhabi

UFC will host four events on a ‘fight island’ in Abu Dhabi, it has been confirmed.

The sport has been looking for a way to navigate through the coronavirus pandemic and was one of the first to return with a series of cards in Florida last month.

Amanda Nunes defended her featherweight title in Las Vegas at the weekend with plans now unveiled for more events next month.

Yas Island will play host to UFC 251 on 11 July with three Fight Nights on 15 July, 18 July and 25 July with the cards and fighters involved yet to be announced.

A number of health and safety protocols will be in place with a ‘safety zone’ in place of ten square miles with only fighters, coaches and UFC staff allowed within the perimeter.

UFC president Dana White said: “We came up with the idea of having fights on ‘Fight Island’ because we needed a destination to hold international events during the global pandemic.

“Abu Dhabi has been an amazing location to hold fights over the past ten years and it is the perfect place for these events.

“The infrastructure we are building will be such a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for the fighters that’s never been done before – from the arena, the private training facility, and the Octagon on the island – it’s going to be an experience that none of us will ever forget.

“I can’t wait to deliver amazing fights from Yas island.”

“Thanks to their commitment and cooperation, we are proud to announce that Abu Dhabi will host the first ever “Fight Island” event, marking the long-awaited return of UFC fights to the global stage.”
