Brooks Guesthouse, Bristol

There's a lot that's surprising about Brooks Guesthouse. First of all it's much more than just a guesthouse, with no less than 23 rooms, a boutique vibe and a fabulous location bang in the heart of Bristol, just a few minutes' walk from the waterfront. Its rooms are furnished in a contemporary style and generously equipped with goose down duvets and high-end bed linen, and (with docking stations and digital radios, flatscreen TVs, DVDs and free wi-fi) you will be extremely comfortable in any of them.

But just in case you fancy something different, it's worth knowing that it also has a fleet of four retro-style Airstream caravans with en-suite bathrooms on the roof – that's right, rooftop glamping right in the middle of Bristol. The caravans range from a 16ft affair with a 4' 6" bed to a larger 20ft caravan with a 5' bed and room for two little ones, and all have predictably great views over the city and beyond. Each has a small and very ingenious bathroom, low-energy heating and lighting and Roberts radios, and you still get the benefit of coming downstairs to enjoy what is rather a good breakfast. The same people have properties in nearby Bath and up in Edinburgh – though neither, sadly, has a caravan on the roof. Yet.
