Air New Zealand rap safety video is ‘cringe’ according to Kiwi MP Shane Jones
The track is inspired by Run DMC’s ‘It’s Tricky’
Airlines seem to be locked in a perpetual battle to make their safety videos engaging and exciting – and Air New Zealand’s latest attempt is splitting public opinion.
Performed by Kiwi artists, the inflight instructions take the form of a rap inspired by Run DMC’s Eighties classic, ‘It’s Tricky’.
While the airline claims that the video – which includes stellar lyrics such as “Business premier, I see you folks are working / Sit upright, hands on thighs, feet to floor / It’s just like twerking!” – has been a success with passengers, critics say it makes a mockery of aviation safety.
New Zealand First MP Shane Jones branded the video “cringe”, saying: “Tourists are confused. They can’t hear it. It’s a lame attempt at entertainment and it’s a type of entertainment that’s toneless, it’s cringe culture, really.”
He added: “I think it trivialises safety. I think it’s a juvenile mish-mash – it’s toneless.”
However, Air New Zealand is sticking to its guns.
“We are proud of the latest safety video and make no apology for celebrating Kiwi culture or showcasing the talents of people from 30 community groups around New Zealand, including in many regions,” Air NZ said in a statement.
“We’re also thrilled that the video has focused attention internationally on New Zealand in a positive way.
“For example, it has received more than 20 million views online and international media coverage. It’s natural that not everyone will like each new safety video, which is signed off by the Civil Aviation Authority before going on board the aircraft.
“However, the overwhelming sentiment for this latest edition is positive.”
The video features more than 600 people and stars musicians Kings, Theia and Randa.
It’s not the first time Air New Zealand has created a viral safety video.
Its 2017 iteration starring Katie Holmes and Cuba Gooding Jr was viewed more than 16 million times on YouTube during the week of its release, while other versions starring everyone from Bear Grylls to cast members from The Hobbit have also garnered global attention.
