Amsterdam’s canals (Reuters)

Head to Amsterdam's canals as the city marks the 400th anniversary of these waterways, and take a look, too, at the Rijksmuseum (rijksmuseum.nl), which has just reopened following a 10-year restoration. Munich's art gallery, the Lenbachhaus (lenbachhaus.de), has just reopened after an extensive renovation and the addition of a modern wing by Norman Foster. The museum is named after the artist Franz von Lenbach – whose former home is now Rocco Forte's The Charles Hotel (00 800 7666 6667; roccofortehotels.com). To mark the occasion, the hotel is offering a special package, the Lenbach Experience, starting 13 May. A three-night stay starts from €1,370 (£1,158)pp, based on two sharing, including breakfast, a guided tour of the museum and a themed cocktail. International travel costs extra.
