No one does creepy quite like the Victorians, and as The Museum of Ricidulously Interesting Things has discovered, a combination of long exposures, wriggly children and a lack of Photoshop, led to some very creepy photos indeed.

The "hidden mother" pictures came about because mothers wanted portraits of their beloved offspring, but long exposures times meant that any movement would result in a blurry-face (also quite creepy). The solution? Hold your child still, and cover your head in a blanket, of course. Unfortunately, the resulting pictures look less like the charming family snapshot they probably had in mind and more like a still from horror movie The Others.
