Burnt out of Kent village life

Sir: A house has been torched and, no doubt, community lips sealed. A housing association's hopes of placing a large family from a problem estate into a quiet Kent village has been burnt at the stake, literally.

It is indicative of the welfare state that large families from problem estates can be rewarded for their reproductive abilities and given alternative housing. Their blendability into a rural community is fundamentally flawed from the start, based on size alone. A little patronising here and a little tolerance there is offered as the answer, but why should members of a village have to engage in a social education process?

By choosing to purchase a village house, people are exercising their right to extricate themselves from a broader cross-section of the community. If the village pond waters are going to be muddied, this will lead inevitably to rural housing development.
