There must, of course, be room in politics for awkward people like Clare Short who are prepared to speak their mind above considerations of party political line following. Ms Short may care to reflect, however, that those who would purge the awkward squad took some delight when she herself was the chief purger of Liz Davies as the Labour candidate for Leeds North-East.
