Apple is holding one of its biggest events of the year, demonstrating all of the software that will soon come to people's devices.

The event will include refreshes of every major piece of software that Apple has, including the operating systems that run its iPhones, Macs, iPads, Apple Watches and Apple TVs.

The company could also unveil some surprise hardware announcements, as well as laying out its plans for things like artificial intelligence more broadly.

That new lock screen is called "raise to wake". It will wake up the phone if it's picked up. That's a way of solving the super-fast fingerprint sensor in the new phone, which means that people often miss their notifications on the lock screen.

Notifications are now completely interactive – you can use 3D touch to see a full version of whatever app you're looking at, without ever actually having to open it. It's like a full version of the app but from the lock screen.

And you can now dismiss them all in one go, meaning that you won't have to click through to get rid of all the notifications.

The 3D Touch presses that came with iPhone 6s are now far, far better – you can see proper information in them like who has sent you emails, all of which you can properly interact with.

Developers are going to be able to use Siri! This is huge – you'll be able to ask Siri to do anything with any of your apps. You can ask to send a WhatsApp to a specific person, for example.

It can do ride booking, so you can ask Uber to bring you a taxi.
