Manchester United welcome Robin van Persie back to Old Trafford for the first time on Thursday night as his Fenerbahce face the Red Devils in the Europa League.

Jose Mourinho is looking to juggle his options for the Group A tie as they look to build on the 1-0 victory at home to Zorya last time out after losing their Europa League opener to Feyenoord.

United, and Mourinho in particular, have one eye on Sunday’s showdown with Chelsea at Stamford Bridge and so are set to shuffle the pack with bug names such as Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Paul Pogba set to be rested.

The two sides are currently level in second and third in the group on three points each as leaders Feyenoord face bottom club Zorya with the games marking the midway point in the group stages.

It’s a big game for…

Luke Shaw. The left-back has been criticised by Mourinho before a period of being dropped and injured but is confirmed as starting against Fenerbahce on Thursday. Shaw needs to get back and playing regularly if he is to force his way back into Mourinho’s first-team plans.

Best stat…

The last time Manchester United won two consecutive European games (excluding qualifiers) was December 2013, under David Moyes.

Remember when...

Wayne Rooney burst onto the scene on his Manchester United debut in 2004 when, aged 18, he scored a stunning hat-trick against Fenerbahce at Old Trafford.

Player to watch…

Robin van Persie. The Dutchman doesn’t get much of a look in at the Turkish club but there is a feeling he could roll back the years on the ground where his memorable hat-trick against Aston Villa helped Manchester United claim a record 20th English league title.
