Southampton have admitted defeat in their fight to hold on to Virgil van Dijk, with Manchester City poised to make an offer between £60 and £70m for the highly-rated defender.

The Dutchman, who failed to force through an exit in the summer after handing in a transfer request, was left out of Mauricio Pellegrino’s squad for the Boxing Day trip to Tottenham.

Speaking in the wake of Southampton’s 5-2 defeat by Spurs, Pellegrino insisted he had no regrets about keeping van Dijk in the summer, despite the defender’s mixed run of form in the first half of the current campaign, but suggested the club are now resigned to losing the 26-year-old.

Arsene Wenger is keen to hold talks with Jack Wilshere over a new contract but said the midfielder's future at the club could hinge on the financial terms of the deal.

Wilshere, who is out of contract at the end of the season, has impressed Wenger with his performances over the last couple of months after breaking into the first team following a season-long loan spell at Bournemouth.

When asked about the 25-year-old's future, Wenger said: "We will sit down with him.

"I believe if he can meet a point of agreement financially, he will want to stay."

Marouane Fellaini is uncertain if he will extend his stay at Manchester United but the midfielder believes manager Jose Mourinho will respect his decision if he chooses to end his spell at Old Trafford.

Fellaini came under fire for his inconsistent performances after signing from Everton in 2013 but the Belgian international has since become an important player in Mourinho's squad.

United triggered a one-year extension in the 30-year-old's contract at the start of the year, but agreeing a deal beyond the end of the current campaign is proving difficult.

Liverpool are set to sign Virgil van Dijk when the transfer window re-opens in January after finally agreeing a fee with Southampton.

The 26-year-old is expected to move to Anfield in a £70m deal – a world-record fee for a defender.

The two clubs have finally settled on a price after reopening negotiations this week, following the breakdown of a move last summer when Southampton complained to the Premier League about Liverpool’s illegal tapping up of the player.

Manchester City and Chelsea had both been interested in signing the Dutch international and are thought to have made separate enquiries, but Van Dijk always favoured a move to Anfield and The Independent understands he is now finally set to join the club he pushed so hard to join last summer.
