John McEnroe reckons this could be the beginning of a new era of Murray dominance and he's probably not wrong. To come out of two gruelling matches to make the final, including yesterday's 3hr 38min semi-final against Milos Raonic, and dominate in such convincing fashion bears testament to what the player is capable of. He's got a resolve and resilience which is unrivaled in the sport. Having proved today what he's capable of, there's no reason he can't go on to assert his authority in next year's season.

As for Novak Djokovic, the Serbian looked shaky and out of sorts. There were a series of overhead smashes which he missed much to the shock of the crowd as his unforced errors handed Murray the upper hand. That's not to take away from Murray's achievement tonight. Victory was well deserved.
